Attic Insulation Removal
Attic Insulation Removal in the Bay Area, CA
When the insulation in your attic is wet, compressed, or has been used by rodents, adding more on top doesn't fix it. We inspect what's there, take out the material that needs to go, and leave the attic clean and ready for whatever comes next.

What the service covers
Attic insulation removal is the job of taking out insulation that no longer does its work, with precautions to limit dust and debris in the living space. It includes:
- An inspection first. We look at the insulation and the attic around it for moisture, mold, pest activity, and general wear, so the scope is based on what's actually there.
- A contained work area. The attic is sealed off from the living space before removal starts, to keep dust and debris where they belong.
- Removal with the right gear. Equipment and protective gear are chosen for the condition of the material we find.
- Bagged disposal. The old insulation is bagged and hauled away for disposal following local regulations. It isn't left on your property.
- Cleaning afterward. Once the material is out, the attic is cleaned and sanitized to deal with residue and odors the old insulation left behind.
When removal is done, the attic is ready for new insulation. We can install it right away or on a separate visit; see our attic insulation installation page for that part of the job.
When to ask for an evaluation
An evaluation makes sense when you notice any of these:
- A musty or animal smell in the house that seems to come from above.
- Water stains on the ceiling, or signs of a past roof leak.
- Insulation that looks flattened, clumped, or has fallen out of place.
- Droppings, nesting material, or tunnels in the insulation.
- You're planning to add new insulation and aren't sure the existing layer should stay.
If you already know rodents got in, removal is often only part of the fix. Our rodent proofing service deals with the entry points.
How the job goes
- Inspection and contamination check: we confirm what the removal involves.
- Containment: the work area is sealed off from the living space.
- Removal: the old insulation comes out with equipment suited to its condition.
- Disposal: the material is bagged and hauled away following local regulations.
- Cleaning and sanitizing: the attic is cleaned once it's empty.
- Ready for new insulation: now or later, on your schedule.
What removal doesn't do
- It doesn't fix the cause. If the insulation got wet from a roof leak or damaged by rodents, removing it doesn't stop the leak or close the entry points. Those need their own repair, before new insulation goes in.
- Some insulation shouldn't be disturbed at all. Vermiculite, a loose, pebble-like insulation found in some older homes, may contain asbestos. The EPA advises leaving it undisturbed and hiring an asbestos professional if it has to be removed. If you think your attic has vermiculite, tell us before the visit.
- What we find sets the scope. Until the attic has been inspected, we can't tell you how much material has to come out.
Frequently asked questions
Do I need to remove old insulation before adding new?
Not always. Insulation that's dry, clean, and in place can sometimes stay. Insulation that's wet, moldy, or contaminated by pests should come out first, because new insulation laid over it keeps the problem in the attic. The inspection is how we tell the difference.
Do you install new insulation after removal?
Yes. It can go in right after removal or on a separate visit. See attic insulation installation.
Will dust from the attic get into the house?
The work area is contained before removal starts, and the attic is cleaned afterward, to help limit dust and debris in the living space.
What happens to the old insulation?
It's bagged and hauled away for disposal following local regulations.
My insulation might be vermiculite. Can you remove it?
Do not disturb it. The EPA recommends using a professional asbestos contractor if removal is necessary. For suspected asbestos-containing material, contact a professional asbestos contractor before planning insulation work.
Do you do insulation removal in Fremont?
Yes. Fremont is where we're based. See insulation removal in Fremont, CA.
